Oman, Sri Lanka boost ties

Colombo: President Mahinda Rajapaksa of the Republic of Sri Lanka received Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah in Colombo, yesterday.

During the meeting, the Omani foreign minister conveyed His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said's sincere greetings and good wishes to the Sri Lankan president and to the country's people, wishing them further progress and prosperity.

In his turn, President Mahinda requested the Omani foreign minister to convey his sincere greetings and good wishes to His Majesty the Sultan and to the Omani people.

The meeting was attended, from the Omani side by Ambassador Saud bin Ahmed Al Barwani, head of West Asia Department, Ambassador Mohammed bin Awadh Al Hassan, head of the Political-Analysis Office and the Minister's Office Department; and the delegation accompanying the minister.

From the Sri Lankan side, the meeting was attended by Professor Gamini Lakshman Peiris, Sri Lankan foreign minister and the secretary-general of the foreign ministry.

MoU signed
According to Lankan official media reports, on Wednesday Alawi signed a memorandum of understanding with Professor G L Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, related to political talks between the Sultanate and Sri Lanka, on the premises of the Sri Lankan foreign ministry.

They discussed ways of promoting the Omani-Sri Lankan relations in various fields, exchange of visits between officials and businessmen with the aim of exploring investment opportunities in both the countries.

Among other matters, the two ministers also discussed trade relations, with particular reference to tea and oil, the proposed opening of a Resident Mission of Oman in Colombo, employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in the Sultanate, and cultural co-operation.
